Recent Client Work...

Water

Many of my clients refer me to their peers when they appreciate my work, so I often develop a cluster of clients in similar fields. Recently I’ve been graced with four assignments related to sustainable fisheries off the New England coast.

  • Facilitating a national workshop for the National Marine Fisheries Service on using economic tools to rebuild and maintain fish habitats
  • Coaching the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance on sustainable funding strategies
  • Helping the Stellwagen National Marine Sanctuary commit to create a comprehensive vision
  • Facilitating public input sessions on “marine protected areas” for the New England Fishery Management Council
Making choices about competing uses for a public resource is difficult, and conversations between stakeholders who care about the ocean have often been adversarial, to say the least. So I was pleased when a commercial fisherman told me: “Getting people who are diametrically opposed to sit right next to each other and speak their minds while still being respectful is an art!”

Recent Writings...

You probably know that my family and I took a six-month sabbatical in Mexico last year, which was fantastic. So many people asked me how we made that happen that I wrote an article in reply, published recently in The Independent Consultant. I recount ten steps, and the first two are:

  • Set the intention; and
  • Set the date!

Going on an adventure means following your nose and seeing where it leads. Surprisingly, ours led us in Mexico to buying a ruin in an ancient town and building a house there. Take a look at the before and after pictures!
